INDIANAPOLIS- Gunnar Nixon has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning gold in the decathlon and achieving a new American Junior record of 8,018 points at the recent World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Thanks to brilliant performances at the recent U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field, Ashton Eaton has been named Athlete of the Month by the United States Olympic Committee while Allyson Felix finished third in the women’s voting for the month of June. The USOC made the announcement Wednesday.
BARCELONA, Spain – Under some very special circumstances, the U.S. women’s qualified for tonight’s final of the women’s 4x400 relay to start the final day of the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona. Not only did the Americans better the time to beat by more than five seconds, they clocked the world-leading junior time of the year, running alone in a time of 3:34.25. The picturesque Estadi Olympic was eerily quiet on the Sunday morning as only a skeleton crew of officials, event organizers, team leaders, and media were on hand to watch the U.S. relay. During the race, announcers and music filled the venue as those on hand cheered the only event that occurred until tonight’s closing of the championships.
BARCELONA, Spain – The 1992 U.S. Olympic Team was heralded as one of the best American squads of all-time with 32 medals in tow from a memorable time in Barcelona. The 2012 U.S. team that competed in Barcelona at the IAAF World Junior Championships will go into the history books as one of the best American squads under the age of 20. With 20 medals, and an all-time record 188 points, the junior team captured some magic that was left from the Olympic team of 20 years ago.

BARCELONA, Spain – For the fifth time in the history of the IAAF World Junior Championships, the United States has swept gold in the 4x100 relay. All-in-all, the two golds were part of a three-medal day for Team USA at Montjüic Olympic Stadium in Barcelona. With one day remaining, this U.S. junior squad has already topped the total World Championships medals won in 2010 in Moncton (15) and are on top of the medal count with 16.
