Eugene, Ore. – The U.S. women put on a show in the field events with the long jumpers having the best ever U.S. performance, and Brittany Borman improving her personal best by more than two feet to win the women’s javelin competition on her 23rd birthday. Today was the final full day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field as 22,497 fans gathered at Hayward Field. The eight-day total attendance was recorded at 167,123.
Anyone who thinks being a professional athlete is all about million-dollar shoe contracts, flying first class and competing all over the world, has never seen a grown woman cry after coming in fourth place at the Olympic Trials.
In the sport of Track & Field, inches matter, seconds matter, and sometimes, when the competitors are particularly exceptional, hundredths of seconds matter. In the Men’s 200m final, Calesio Newman was painfully reminded of that fact.

Hayward Field was just waking up when the gun went off to start the Men’s 20,000 meter Race Walk at 7:30 this morning. Compared to the afternoon and evening attendance at these Trials, the stands were practically deserted. This isn’t surprising when you take into consideration the early hour, the time it takes to complete the race (over an hour) and the lack of glory and understanding of the Race Walk. This doesn't stop the athletes from competing though, and it didn’t stop Dan Serianni from achieving a personal record when two days ago he wasn't even sure if he’d be able to compete.
