I would like to introduce myself to the USATF FL family! I am Melinda Wheatley or Mel as most folks call me. I'm from the Tampa area and work in the Therapeutic Recreation field with people with disabilities. I am also blessed to be an ITO with the International Paralympic Committee. Therefore my passion is to get more athletes with disabilities involved in track and field overall but especially in Florida. My goal for this year is to contact all the school districts and clubs to encourage them to include these special athletes in their programs and also to promote specialized programs in more areas of the state. Currently there are 4 Paralympic Sport programs for people with physical disabilities and 100s of Special Olympic organizations in Florida. But there are so many people in Florida with disabilities that dont know how to get involved! So many potential athletes ! If you know someone with a disability that would like to get involved or know of a program that welcomes athletes with disabilities, please refer them to me so we can assist them with trainings, equipment or resources to make them successful. If you would like to help with these efforts and join the committee, please email me at or call me at 813-744-5310.
